Day 3 1/2- Trek- July 2014

Next in the activities was dancing.  Everyone got together to dance the three dances that the youth learned before Trek.  They were having so much fun.  I tried to get Grant to come dance, but he wanted to rest.  So we watched the youth.  It was fun seeing them interact with one another.  Then they asked for a few adults to dance, to even out the numbers.  I volunteered.  I had a lot of fun dancing.  One of the dances we switched partners several times.  Sometimes we messed up but we laughed.  Then the next dance, we mostly had one partner.  I kind of felt bad for the poor kid that had to dance with me, the adult.  LOL!

The last activity was 3 stations run by each member of the Stake Presidency.  The first one was the Iron Rod.  They blindfolded the kids and led them through a forest.  The kids were “tempted” by “bad angels” and “led” by “good angels.”  They were told to hold on to the Iron Rod and not let go for anything.  We even told them before they left not to let go for anything.  The tempters told them lies like I will give you a donut or the trail ends, you can let go now.  Some of my kids were holding super tight and wouldn’t even let go at the very end.  Others did let go, but eventually they were told that they could “repent” and get back on the Iron Rod.  In the end, President Coppin was waiting with a hug and a piece of fruit from the “Tree of Life.”  Then the kids came over with their families.  It was so neat to welcome each of our kids.  The only thing that took away from that special moment was that one of our children, Chandler, decided not to participate.  It made me sad not to have him there with us.  We had a really good talk as a family about choosing the right in life and not listening to those with the voices that are leading us astray.  We talked about how much harder that is in our real lives.  It was a really spiritual, amazing talk and possibly my favorite moment of Trek.  The other two were talks by President Moss and President Warning.  President Moss talked about rocks and how to overcome the rocks in our lives.  The kids made necklaces with rocks.  President Warning talked about how some of the pioneers were allowed to pack only 17 pounds and asked what we would choose to bring.  He also asked what people wouldn’t be able to leave behind- what is holding us back?  He shared a story of one family who wouldn’t leave their piano behind and the hardships that they endured because of it.  I’m pretty sure they ended up leaving it in the middle of the trail too.  Next, we sent the kids off to have solo time, which is when they write in their journals or read their scriptures or whatever they chose to do, they just had to be by themselves.  Well, Cassie and Quintin went way back in the woods.  Quintin came back late and said he couldn’t find Cassie anywhere.  We started looking and couldn’t find her.  We were feeling very worried.  We looked all over for like an hour, way back in the woods.  Quintin and his friend and I even said a prayer in the middle of the woods.  It was a real comfort and we felt that everything was okay.  We went back to camp and someone had found her.  We both hugged and started crying.  Quintin hugged her too.  We were so glad she was okay.

That evening, they brought us our watermelons that we won, in ice water!  We hadn’t had ice water in days!!  I think everyone was just as excited to get that, as the watermelons!  The watermelons tasted so good!  We ate one for dinner and one for breakfast!  I even saw Grant eat a piece, and he doesn’t even like watermelon.  We shared some with some friends- our daughter Riana, our captains, etc.  We all helped prepare dinner.  The boys got the water, prepared the charcoal, and dealt with the dutch ovens.  The ladies (and some boys) helped peel the vegetables.  We had a yummy soup.  And for dessert… my favorite food on Trek… Dutch Oven Apple Crisp… Oh my goodness!  I wanted to lick the dutch oven clean… LOL!!!  It was that good!
